A section of MCAs from Western Kenya sugar belt have threatened to mobilise residents against MPs who do not champion for the protection of the sugar industry. Kisumu county assembly majority leader Samuel Ong'ou accused some MPs for doing little in drafting laws that will protect local millers and farmers. “These are the same MPs who passed the Value Added Tax Bill that imposed duty on sugarcane,” he said. Ongou said the MPs should stop playing politics with matters of livelihoods. Nandi MCAs led by Chemase ward representative Martin told the MPs to stop taking cane farmers for a ride.
