35 per cent land in Siaya used for food production

SIAYA Governor Cornel Rasanga has said out of 190,000 hectares of arable land in the region, only 66,500 hectares is used to grow food. Rasanga said that represents 35 per cent of the land being cultivated for food production. He said minimal agriculture activities contribute to 58 per cent poverty index in the county. He attributed the low productivity to low technology adoption and unreliable rainfall, which contributes to average yield of 9.5 bags against the potential of 40 per hectare.
