A section of Mumias sugar growers have resumed cane farming with new cane varieties. The new cane seeds introduced by the Mumias Sugar Company mature early and are diseaseresistant. Akatu Opiyo, a farmer from Shirotsa village in Butere district said he earlier quit cane farming following poor yields and low returns. “The expense involved in preparing land, buying fertiliser and seed cane was beyond my reach. I incurred huge losses after harvesting,” he said. Last month, Opiyo’s 0.22 acre piece of land yielded 36 metric tonne of cane which earned him Sh211,000. Mumias Sugar Company director...
